SCVYS Youth Work Development Project ( 8 -13)

SCVYS - Youth Work Development Project Outline

Managed through the Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services (SCVYS) the project has County wide responsibility for the development and support of voluntary sector junior youth provision. Specifically developing and promoting a model framework for delivery with 8 – 13 year olds. Our developmental role includes coordinating the voluntary sector development grants, developing and delivering voluntary sector governance support / development (Management Toolkit) and curriculum development support programme (Delivery Toolkit), delivered through a programme of curriculum events, activities, opportunities training and also creating and promoting a new junior accreditation package which is centred around a development programme focused on contributing to ECM 5 outcomes.

We aim to provide an overall package of Localised support to registered junior youth groups whilst recognizing good practice and promoting a model frame work for junior youth work delivery.

The priorities of the project are currently being developed through the following:
Key Developments Areas:

Delivery Support Grant: Targeting: Newcastle, Leek, Cheadle, Stafford, Burton and Lichfield Rural – Approx £50,000 which is being used to extend junior provision and promote good practice by providing a balanced programme of 2 sessions - personal & social education and a 2nd of physical activity linked to the following:

Curriculum Support Programme: - Which provides training, events, activities and opportunities based on the ECM 5 outcomes allowing groups to demonstrate their contribution to meeting the 5 outcomes of Being Healthy, Staying Safe, Enjoying & Achieving, Economic Well being whilst making a positive contribution. The project provides specific junior work training, resources, programme of activities, models of delivery, practical support and mentoring, accreditation package that recognize children’s achievements.

Junior Leaders Training Course: - Development and delivery of a course aimed at 13 to 19 age range who become involved in the delivery of junior youth groups. The course will initially be delivered around three themes each leading to accreditation – Mentoring – Play work – Junior Participation and Involvement.

Governance Toolkit: – Although the ‘Development Grant’ are short term and time limited the Junior Youth Work Development Project is permanent and the development of the governance toolkit may enable adult groups to feel confident about continuing their work and sustaining a voluntary service to young people whilst continuing to receive support through their membership and affiliation to SCVYS and the work of the Junior Youth Work Development Team.

Junior Youth Work (8-13) Accreditation Package JP2S: We are developing an accreditation package which will follow the destinations of ECM and the 5 outcomes. In groups or individually each child will identify tasks to achieve within each of the five destinations. Coordinated by group leaders the tasks can be tailored to the needs and strengths of the individual and supported by curriculum support material being developed by the Junior Youth work Development Project. The junior accreditation package can support groups to develop a programme that demonstrates their contribution to ECM 5 outcomes, whilst recognizes the achievements of every child regardless of their ability and providing a standard in terms of quality.
