Council’s new deal to support communities

A three-year commitment to support community and voluntary groups in Staffordshire has been signed by the county council.

The £800,000 agreement will be delivered across the county by a consortium of three groups with a brief to help develop a sustainable, growing voluntary sector that works with residents who need support, as well as backing initiatives such as lunch clubs, community gardening projects and library volunteering.

Ian Parry, deputy leader of Staffordshire County Council and cabinet member for Finance and Corporate Matters, said: “Voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations already have a big, positive impact in their communities and we wish to work closely with them to have a greater influence on demand for services.

“This contract is a continuation of the work we have done with the voluntary sector for many years and will offer practical support to residents and new or established groups that want to make a difference where they live.”

The consortium comprises the Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services; Support Staffordshire; and South Staffordshire Community & Voluntary Action, and is collectively known as the SCVYS Delivery Partnership.

Phil Pusey, spokesperson for the delivery partnership, said: “As a group of organisations committed to supporting a wonderfully diverse local voluntary sector we are delighted to have been selected to work with the County Council on the development of their Community Based Approach.

“It is focused on improving the quality of life for everyone in Staffordshire by encouraging personal and family resilience whilst developing community resourcefulness so that people are able to help themselves and each other building on the fantastic community spirit that already exists in many parts of the county.

“By working together at both a strategic and local level, we hope to develop new ways of working bringing creative solutions which will improve life for the residents of Staffordshire.”

Ian Parry added: “The consortia’s bid demonstrated a clear understanding of how the public sector is changing and offered a strong proposal to work with communities on targeted prevention and early intervention.

“We see this as a two-way relationship with the consortia as we focus on helping people in the community and connecting those who need support with those who are able to help.”
